Marikina City, Philippines – Three individuals who allegedly posed as IT specialists with connections to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) were arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR) in Marikina City for extorting money from a political candidate.
According to CIDG, the suspects were involved in a scheme targeting mayoral and vice-mayoral candidates in Cagayan province. A complaint was filed against them after they allegedly demanded ₱90 million from unnamed candidates in the municipality of Enrile, in exchange for guaranteeing their victory in the upcoming elections.
The suspects claimed they had the ability to manipulate election results due to their supposed ties with COMELEC. However, the victims had already coordinated with CIDG, leading to an entrapment operation where the suspects were caught in the act of receiving the extortion money.
The arrested individuals have been taken to Camp Crame, where they face charges of robbery-extortion and violations of the Omnibus Election Code. Meanwhile, authorities are pursuing four other individuals believed to be involved in the scheme.
Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspects had any legitimate connections to COMELEC or if they had targeted other candidates in similar fraudulent operations.
