PDEA Cracks Down as Drug Traders Move to Social Media and E‑Wallets

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) reports that illegal drug sellers in Occidental Mindoro are increasingly using social media platforms and e‑wallet services like GCash to conduct transactions, making it more challenging for authorities to detect traditional street‑level trades. PDEA Provincial Director Jeremy Junio disclosed during a December 17 joint peace and order meeting in Mamburao that suspects often finalize deals online and use a “dead drop” method posting the location of hidden drugs for buyers to collec thus reducing direct contact with law enforcement. In response, PDEA is intensifying cyber monitoring and financial tracking efforts. The agency collaborates with national cybercrime and financial intelligence units, as well as telecommunications and digital service providers, to trace suspicious online activity and potentially freeze digital accounts linked to illegal drug operations. At the same time, community engagement remains a priority. PDEA continues to urge barangay councils and residents to report suspicious behavior, noting that many street‑level activities often become noticeable locally before authorities are alerted. Junio confirmed that methamphetamine continues to be the most commonly sold drug in the province, with prices around ₱4,000 per gram. In recent months, PDEA’s targeted operations led to the arrest of several high‑value suspects and the dismantling of a drug den in San Jose—a move officials say is vital because such hubs often perpetuate repeated illegal activities including prostitution. Beyond enforcement, PDEA is also boosting preventive programs, conducting lectures in schools, workplaces, and barangays to raise awareness about digital safety and how online platforms are exploited for the drug trade. The agency says it will continue expanding its use of cyber surveillance, financial intelligence, community reporting mechanisms, and educational outreach to address evolving methods used by drug syndicates.
