DICT Warns of Possible DDoS Attacks on November 5 Amid Global Hacktivist Activity
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has warned of potential Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, coinciding with the annual Million Mask March — a date closely linked to hacktivist movements and digital protests around the world.
In a public advisory, DICT said it is monitoring for possible “traffic floods,” a type of cyberattack where multiple devices send massive amounts of data to a target system or network, causing it to slow down, become unstable, or crash entirely.
November 5 gained renewed global significance through the film V for Vendetta — a dystopian story about a masked vigilante known as V who rebels against a corrupt and authoritarian government. The iconic Guy Fawkes mask, originally tied to the 1605 Gunpowder Plot to blow up England’s Parliament, became a modern symbol of resistance after the movie’s release.
The famous line “Remember, remember, the Fifth of November” captures the spirit of defiance that transcends time. What began as a failed attempt to challenge tyranny centuries ago evolved into a cultural and digital movement against oppression and censorship.
Groups such as Anonymous later adopted the mask and the date as emblems of protest — rallying against corruption, surveillance, and injustice in both physical and digital spaces.
In the Philippines, November 5 also carries local historical weight. The Cinco de Noviembre uprising of 1898 saw revolutionaries in Negros deceive Spanish forces into surrendering, marking a rare victory through wit and courage rather than firepower.
From V for Vendetta’s fictional rebellion to real-world digital activism, November 5 remains a powerful reminder that the courage to challenge injustice — whether on the streets or in cyberspace — begins with a single act of resistance.
